Pennsic LI
Greater Æthelmearc

Documented from the Rolls and Files of the Coram Regibus of Murdoch I Rex and Ríoghnách I Regina, King and Queen of Æthelmearc: Being a True Record of the Business of Their Royal Court at the 51st Pennsic War, 28th July to 8th August, AS LIX. As recorded by Gwendolyn the Graceful, Brehyres, Meistr-y-gân, Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald, with the assistance of Baroness Ekaterina Volkova, Meisterrin Helena Mützhazenin, Lærifaðir jǫrundr hinn rotinn, Silver Buccle Herald, Mistress Gytha Oggsdottir, Silver Sycamore Herald, The Honorable Lord Owen Tegg, The Honorable Lady Magdalena Txoperena, Maighstir Liam Mac an Tsaoir, and Baron Salvadore de la Torres.

Sunday, July 28:
In the morning, Their Majesties reported to the Watch and asked to speak with those members of the Most Noble Order of the Pelican in attendance. They then inquired whether Baroness Rhiannon of Ravenglas should be numbered among them, to which they responded in the affirmative. Whereupon, Their Majesties called for Her Excellency and issued to her a Writ of Summons to return to Court on Friday and give answer whether she would accept elevation to that Order. Scroll by Baroness Sophie Davenport. Court Suspended.

Friday, August 2

In the Royal Camp, Their Majesties were joined by Her Majesty of the Midrealm, Tsaritsa Katalena. They then received Baroness Rhiannon of Ravenglas and demanded her answer the question put to her upon the previous Sunday. She answered yes; whereupon Their Majesties heard words of testimony. From the Order of the Chivalry, Viscount Edmund Dracatorr commented that while there are many virtues of chivalry he could cite, the one that came first to mind when thinking of Baroness Rhio was righteousness. Righteousness is about making a determination in the face of questions from one or two or many, and making a decision as an authority, about what is right–not fair, or good, or partisan, but right, and carrying that choice no matter what is easy or expedient. Speaking directly to Her Excellency, he said that he has spent working for many years alongside Baroness Rhio and that he is only here because she has been with him, she has been his right hand, making things happen quietly from behind the scenes, with righteousness, making sure that they are doing the right thing, and holding themselves accountable for those determinations. For the Laurel, Baron Estgar æt Hrofeceastre read words from Duchess Rowan de la Garnison, saying that some make art that is noticeable, with silk ribbons, gold leaf, parchment, gems, and silver, making one notice its beauty. Other art focuses on simple lines, quality of workmanship, and utility of purpose: a pouch, a good set of boots, and armor that fits well. Some art is behind the lens, focusing on others, yet capturing moments and memories. Rhiannon's art is her service; preferring to work behind the lens, focusing on others, learning what needed to be done and doing quiet service to get it done. Her quality of service lasts and will be built upon in the future. She sets the standard for dedication to unselfish service, not for recognition, but because it needs doing and it is worth doing right. Master Quinn Kerr sent words from the Order of Defense, read by Baroness Juliana Rosalia Dolce di Siena: a poem extolling Her Excellency's virtue and the heart that she brings to her work, to bring the Dream to life for others. Countess Alexandra read the words of Duchess Meirwen uerch Owain, representing Royal Peers. The details she associated with Her Excellency are shiny knives, a dazzling smile, and stylish, slightly scuffed, dusty boots, which she found telling and appropriate. The boots that carry her from task to task, distinctive as a role model but willing to get a little scuffed up in the work. The smile that is welcoming, bright, and makes you want to do whatever she is doing that makes her so happy. Eyes that flash with energy and make you feel seen. She gives you her full attention and really listens, making them feel they really matter, whether for a long conversation or only for a moment or two while walking a Pennsic road. She knows how to set limits and goals, and usually does both wisely, is unafraid to speak truth to power respectfully and impactfully. These are all the qualities of a Peer and it is right that she be recognized as such today. Baroness Ekaterina Volkova, as a Jewel of Æthelmearc, spoke to the qualities of the Jewel: embodiments of the society, but that the embodiment of the Society is simple the people, for without the people, there can be no Society. Her Excellency went on to state that Rhio found her calling through serving the people–in barony, kingdom, and society. She has made it her mission to serve the people who travel to the Sylvan Lands, helping those who cannot do, protecting those in need, and fixing that which is wrong. For close to three decades, she has worked behind the scenes before the gates open, and after they close, from before the sun rises until after it sets. If “service is love made visible,” then it is beyond time that her service was made visible to all. Baron Cunedda Kell, speaking on behalf of the Pelican, recounted meeting Rhiannon over 30 years ago, and getting to know her, and showed her just a bit of what service was. From there, she left him far behind, serving Barons, Baronesses, Kings, and Queens, and then finding the Watch and a family in which she grew. She would drop the hammer when necessary, but she was here to do service, not to be seen doing it, not to make friends, but merely to serve. Having heard these words, Their Majesties declared that even if they knew nothing else about her, these words would compel them to continue. They then invited all members of the Most Noble Order of the Pelican to attend, and asked once more if they would have this lady among them. At their assent, they called for the Ancestral Medallion. A lineage medallion was also presented, as well as a family medallion, and a personal medallion. Her Excellency was then cloaked with the emblem of the Pelican. Whereupon, Her Excellency swore her oath of service to the Kingdom, and was elevated by Letters Patent to the Most Noble Order of the Pelican. Promissory scroll by Baroness Ekaterina Volkova. Court Suspended.

Sunday, August 4

At the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands reception, Their Majesties requested that Brehyres Gwendolyn the Graceful come before the throne and inquired of her the answer to the question that had been put to her some time ago, whether she was prepared to be inducted into the Most Noble Order of the Pelican. With her affirmation, They called for words of testimony. Viscount Haakon Oaktall, Principal Jewel of Æthelmearc, allowed that the Jewel has many things in common with all the Peerages, for it is an example to all, of courtesy, service, supporting the arts, the martial pursuits. and one who makes others feel comfortable and welcome, and all of these are expected of a Pelican. He further affirmed that Gwendolyn is and has been his Peer, and was honored to speak on her behalf. For the Chivalry, Duchess Morgen of Rye, spoke of the way in which Gwendolyn has inspired so many people, and will continue to inspire, both in bardic circles or in endless service, as well as on the field. On behalf of the Laurel, Mistress Arianna of Wynthrope, spoke of how Gwendolyn's heraldry is in itself an art, running courts with poise and confidence, already at the level of a Peer. Master Dorinda Courtenay spoke from the Order of Defense on how Gwendolyn had sung praises of others, often literally, traveling many miles to serve as a herald, speaking of others' deeds and watching as they are recognized, but on this day, it was mete that those gathered had the chance to sing her praise, and speak to the ways in which she has made the kingdom better, and to listen to the voices of the Crown and their Herald to recognize her as the Pelican that she is. Representing the Royal Peers, Countess Genevieve du Vent Argent spoke of Her Excellency's long work as a servant to reigns, including creating the role of the Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald during the first reign of Duke Byron and Duchess Ariella, a model which has carried on, and through which she has continued to support the Crown and the Kingdom. And for the Pelican, Baroness Ekaterina Volkova attested that, having known Her Excellency for nearly all her time in the Society, in all that time, she has served, including creating the Æthelmearc Bardic College, having written songs sung throughout the Kingdom, teaching dance, holding offices both local and at Kingdom level, wrangling royals, moderating Orders, and reading challenging scrolls. Baroness Ekaterina pointed out that even while serving as Their Majesties' Herald, she is also serving on the Pennsic staff, so that the Known World might enjoy and learn about performing arts. Hearing these endorsements, Their Majesties were minded to continue, and called into Their presence those members of the Most Noble Order of the Pelican (who serenaded Her Excellency with a chorus of “something and something and Scarlet”). Whereupon, Her Excellency was presented with the ancestral medallion, a personal medallion, a livery collar, a hood, and a cap of maintenance, and renewed her oath of fealty as a Companion of the Pelican. Scroll in progress by The Honorable Lady Lisabetta de Rossi with words by Baroness Ekaterina Volkova.

Rather than release Meistr Gwendolyn to be greeted, Their Majesties required that she take up her post once more as Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald.

Their Majesties then desired Lady Elinor Walden to attend Them. Their Majesties complimented her on her garb and the garb of others that were her handiwork. They then revealed that they had been inundated with words of praise about her skills, but that coupled with what they have already seen for Themselves, her impact is in no doubt. Thus Their Majesties called for the Noble Order of the Fleur D'Æthelmearc and created her by Grant of Arms a Companion of that Order. Scroll illuminated by Magnifica Fede di Fiore, calligraphy by The Honorable Lady Lisabetta de Rossi, upon text by Magister Casimir Zelený z Strášná Skála and Baronessa Elena de la Palma.

At this time, Lærfaðir jǫrundr hinn rotinn temporarily "fired" the Jewel of Æthelmearc Herald, reminding her that she had a rôle to play in the next item of business.

Immediately thereafter, Their Majesties received a “Speedy Delivery” from Mr McFeely. Upon reading the contents of the missive, Their Majesties, agreeing with its content, gave it over to Lærfaðir jǫrundr hinn rotinn to be read into Court, by which means, The Honorable Lady Ceindrech verch Eilidir was summoned before the thrones and charged to answer whether she would consider elevation into the Most Noble Order of the Pelican. Scroll by Baroness Sophie Davenport.

Their Majesties, knowing that many members of the Order were present, asked upon that moment whether this was a welcome letter. With their enthusiastic accord, They proceeded to call for members of the Peerage to attest to Her Ladyship's suitability for this accolade. Duke Thomas Byron of Haverford spoke on behalf of Royal Peers, saying that no one is surprised to see Her Ladyship's name on scrolls that are presented, or in announcements as event steward or running activities, but that this should not be taken for granted, but rather that the Kingdom should step forward and acclaim that this lack of surprise speaks volumes as to the amount of service she has done, fully worthy of Peerage. As a member of the Order of Chivalry, Duchess Ariella of Thornbury recounted an acquaintance of over 20 years that began outside the Society but that led to Her Ladyship coming to an event with her family in tow, and that since that time, there has never been a day when Her Grace has not been proud that Her Ladyship joined the SCA, for since that time, she has done nothing but serve: teaching youth fighting in the Barony and at Pennsic from early in the morning. Her Grace spoke to the commitment required to teach families and youth their value, by being there consistently for them to learn, and that this is by its nature chivalric. This is a mark of service with no expectation of reward, for these are families just trying to make it through Pennsic with children, but done out of love for the Society and the values it imparts. Mistress Ts'vee'a bas Tseepora Levi, as a Mistress of the Laurel, spoke of Her Ladyship's calligraphy and skill at fiber arts, and especially the combination of the two, but in particular, of Her Ladyship's skill at repairing scrolls for people who need to change them after the fact can find inclusion and belonging in a tangible way, and that this too is a service, giving gentles art that they can still treasure knowing that it truly represents them and they can be proud of it, as she was proud to see Her Ladyship recognized as a Peer. Lærfaðir jǫrundr hinn rotinn claimed the right to speak as a Master of Defense, who addressed Her Ladyship to assure her of her leadership, that she shows the way to others, and that he was proud to call her his Peer. Two members of the Order of the Pelican, Brehyres Muirgheal inghen Dubhghaill, and Baroness Hilderun Hügelmann, competed in a fierce game of rochambeau for the honor to speak first; having won that right, Brehyres Muirgheal began by saying that Ceindrech “grows” everything: youth, scribal community, and newcomers alike, by teaching them, welcoming them, showing them how to move forward, and making us all better. She keeps us safe, both in the past as a chirurgeon, and through helping with background checks for our youth ministers, and continuing to work with youth even though her own children could have youth of their own by now. She works with others in the Society to improve our diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, to make sure that our members and our newcomers feel welcome, wanted, and deserving. Finally, she encourages all to move forward, to embrace change, including new technological aids and young, new officers for the Barony, making a place and building a home for all. Then Baroness Hilderun Hügelmann continued that she knows Ceindrech, and knows people. Most people start off thinking, “This is going to be fun!” and later learn, “this is hard, but it's going to be worth it.” Ceindrech does things backward, looking around and saying, “This is going to be worth it for other people, and it's going to be hard, but it's going to be worth it for my people,” and then, “Oh, and it's going to be fun, too.” She then makes it fun for others and for herself, and on top of everything else already said, that endorses her as a Peer. Their Majesties then called for the Most Noble Order of the Pelican to attend Them, and as an Order, they confirmed again that they wished Ceindrech to be numbered among them. The ancestral medallion was presented, followed by two personal medallions, a hood, and a cap of maintenance. Their Majesties then heard her oath of service, and raised her by Letters Patent to be a Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Pelican. Scroll illuminated by The Honorable Lord Owen Tegg with embroidery as researched and taught by Magister Ceindrech verch Eilidir, calligraphy by Mistress Arianna of Wynthrope, with words by Baron Alaric MacConnal, upon parchment by Mistress Abigail Kelhoge. Court suspended (and all were allowed to consume cookies!).

Later that evening at the Known World Heralds’ Reception at Heralds’ Point. Their Majesties gave leave to Lærifaðir jǫrundr hinn rotinn, Silver Buccle Herald, to conduct business in Their Court. jǫrundr spoke of one of the privileges and duties of a Principal Herald. That being to recognize those whose contributions to the heraldic community are most excellent and impactful. He called Maistres Myfanwy ferch Rhiannon before him. jǫrundr spoke of her years working and growing the artists’ tent at Pennsic, and her work in 2 Kingdoms as staff artist. jǫrundr then named Maistres Myfanwy a Herald Extraordinary and further directed her to choose and register an appropriate personal heraldic title. Scroll by The Honorable Lady Lisabetta de Rossi with words by Lærifaðir jǫrundr hinn rotinn.

Monday, August 5

Upon the Field, Their Majesties desired to be attended by Lord Magnus Arminius, known as Mobius. Their Majesties spoke to him of his continued efforts upon the field of combat, including his service in the battle that very morning. Saying that word of his prowess had reached Them from other quarters as well, They called for Their Noble Order of the Gage and named him a Companion, Granting him Arms. Scroll illuminated by The Honorable Lord Owen Tegg, calligraphed by Magister Ceindrech verch Eilidir, with words by Baron Alaric MacConnal. Court suspended.

In the afternoon, at the Royal Encampment, Their Majesties invited Hersir Marek Viacheldrago before Them and sent him to his place of vigil to hear counsel regarding induction into the Most Noble Order of the Pelican. Court suspended.

That evening, Their Majesties once again called Hersir Marek Viacheldrago to present himself and give answer whether he would add the responsibilities of a Pelican to those of Knight. Upon his reply in the affirmative, Their Majesties heard mighty words from Peers of many lands. Earl Benen MacTire of Meridies, speaking for the Chivalry, shared that the Anglo-Saxon word “knight” meant “server of men,” and that Marek embodies that as a representative of the Order, no less than he would embody service as a Companion of the Pelican. Duke Ragnar Blackhammer of Atlantia, Master of Defense, explained that part of the key to a martial Order is to do the same thing, over and over and over, perfecting form and technique, and that Hersir Marek also does things over and over again, because it needed to be done, or because Their Majesties requested it, or because the people needed it, all hallmarks of the Pelican. Duke Ullr Aramanthson of the Midrealm, Laurel, characterized that Order as one that creates and builds, and attested that Hersir Marek is one who has created family and built an army, events, and friendships through his tireless work. Speaking through Sir Tristan Sexwulf, Duke Christopher of York and Duchess Maurya Etain Sableswan sent words as Royal Peers, those who give of themselves and whose noble being inspires others, and that Marek is also one who gives of himself and serves with joyous spirit, whole heart, and who shares not only his efforts, but the rewards of his efforts, with the people, as an exemplar of what it means to be a Peer. Duke Rurik Longsword, son of Æthelmearc but lately of the East, on behalf of the Order of the Pelican, shared that he had lately learned that the birds that flock on the island of Alcatraz are Pelicans, and thus was pleased to welcome Hersir Marek into the “Department of Corrections” for the SCA. His Grace also presented Marek with a belt adorned with the symbol of the Order, saying that he serves as if it is natural. Their Majesties declared Themselves more than pleased with these words of endorsement, and invited forth all those members of the Most Noble Order of the Pelican and received their acclaim that Marek should join the Order. He was presented with the ancestral medallion, a personal medallion, and a hood bearing the emblem of the Order. He then renewed his oath and was confirmed a Companion of the Order. Scroll by Baron Sasson de Sancta Victoria. Court suspended.

Tuesday, August 6

In the morning, Their Majesties invited Her Majesty, Tsarina Katalena of the Midrealm to join Them.

Their Majesties then received Viscount Edmund Dracatorr, who affirmed that he consented to be inducted into the Noble Order of the Pelican, but before doing so, His Excellency wished to renew his oath of fealty, as he had not yet had an opportunity to fulfill this obligation as a Knight of Æthelmearc. This done, Their Majesties invited those members of the Most Noble Order of the Pelican present to come forward. This company resoundingly confirmed their wish to call His Excellency their Companion, and thus, he was presented with the ancestral medallion, a personal medallion, and his cloak, which he himself had augmented with the badge of the Order. Scroll by Lady Murdia Drusilla Vettia Portia upon words by Mistress Nuzhah bint Saleem and Mistress Sadira bint Wassouf. Court suspended.

Later, upon the field, Their Majesties wished to be attended by the Order of the White Scarf, and commented that They were minded to add one to their ranks before the upcoming battle. They had received good reports of one, whom They believed ready to be named to the Order. Thus Their Majesties requested the presence of Lord Lucha Delion. Master Cyrus Augur removed the blue scarf marking him as a cadet and replaced it with one of white. A second scarf was also presented from his house, and a copy of the lineage tree from which he descended. Scroll by Lady Kolfinna Jodisardottir upon words by Master Cyrus Augur and “some guy in a hat” (Master Po Silvertop). Court suspended.

In the evening, Their Majesties invited the assembled Baronages of the Kingdom to join Them in Their Court.

The populace was advised that the site was under a tornado watch and to use caution if they needed to leave to see to their own camps or others not in attendance. Their Majesties expressed the hope that the populace had been inconvenienced and not punished by the weather, but given that Pennsic is home to every weather there is, They endeavored to press on.

Their Majesties then invited the youth of the kingdom forward, and after speaking with them about their rain boots, puddle jumping, and fun in the rain, They invited the children to select toys from the toy chest.

Their Majesties welcomed several newcomers with drinking vessels.

Their Majesties then received the Clothiers' Guild, who made a presentation to the Court of the first two new heraldic hoods: Silver Buccle and Silver Sycamore, with the promise of more hoods to come, as alternative regalia to the tabards for the Kingdom's officers and deputies. The next set are planned to be delivered at Coronation.

Their Majesties then sought Ædiva of Cratorne. Noting her skill with balms, herbs, apothecarial arts, and especially, her assistance in the kitchen including chopping onions without crying, Their Majesties were minded to Award her Arms. Scroll by Meisterin Amalie Reinhardt with words by Master Toki Skádagörvir.

Their Majesties next desired to be attended by Spartacus Seutonius Saturnalicus, with whom They had hoped to speak for some time. Finding it good that he was present, They shared some reports that had reached Them of his stalwart defense within the shieldwall, his strength, his ability to respond to command and to execute the orders given to the line, and in all ways, his conduct befitting a noble, and thus, They were pleased to Award him Arms. Scroll by Baron Caleb Reynolds.

Their Majesties wished next to speak with Ragnar inn Raudi. Having heard and seen that this young person is a fixture within his Barony, constantly helping kitchens, setting up, tearing down, retaining, training youth fighters after graduating from the youth program himself, as well as applying himself to archery and thrown weapons, Their Majesties felt it mete and proper to recognize him as a noble of the Court, and Award him Arms. Scroll by Nandin and Mistress Daedez of the Moritu.

Following this, Their Majesties desired that Lord Ingvar Sviatoslavic present himself. While Their Majesties are used to seeing a somewhat different Ingvar, They nonetheless acknowledged that good reports had reached Them of Lord Ingvar's growing skills in heavy combat, as well as his comportment upon the field, both in melee and tournament, and thus Their Majesties deemed it right to name him a Companion of the Order of the Golden Alce. Scroll by Baron Ixac ben Simone.

Next, Their Majesties called for Lord Radomir Bakalarz. Noting with pleasure that They had personally witnessed Lord Radomir's skills with Thrown Weapons and had gotten to know him some little bit during the recent months, They were gratified to learn that others shared this fine assessment of his skills and contributions to his Barony, and thus, They were minded to name him a Companion of the Golden Alce. Scroll by Lady Umbriana Campana.

At this time, Their Majesties invited Maistresse Yviane de Castel D'Avignon and Mistress Jenna MacPherson to address the populace on behalf of the Hospitality team at the Royal Encampment. Their Majesties thanked them both for their leadership and for all their assistants, who kept hospitality running smoothly, and who showed the Known World the generosity and graciousness of Pennsic's host kingdom and who made Æthelmearc Royal a welcoming space for all. Maistresse Yviane and Mistress Jenna also asked Their Majesties to draw lottery tickets for the gift baskets they had organized to thank our volunteers: the winners were Baroness Oddkatla Jonsdottir and Praetoria Prima Aurelia Argentia of the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands.

Their Majesties then asked all those in attendance who held Pennsic Staff positions to signify by raising their hands or rising. They further asked all who had volunteered in any way for Pennsic, teaching, marshalling, helping at any of the various points, to also raise their hands or rise. In addition to thanking all who gave their time in these ways, Their Majesties announced that They were collecting the number of hours donated and the various types of service performed by the Kingdom's subjects by means of an online survey, and asked all to provide that information to aid further discussions about kingdom parity, division of labor, and other topics relevant to Pennsic operations.

Following this, Their Majesties wished to receive Lord Phoebus Craythorn. Their Majesties recounted a number of Lord Phoebus' artistic pursuits, including leatherwork, sewing, brewing, the creation of archery targets, armoring, and more. For these skills and for his donation of his time and talent to the betterment of his Shire and the Kingdom, Their Majesties were minded to make him a Companion of the Order of the Sycamore. Scroll by Meisterin Amalie Reinhardt with words by Master Toki Skádagörvir.

Their Majesties next requested the presence of The Honorable Lord Rouland of Willowbrooke. Their Majesties declared Themselves impressed by His Lordship's endeavors and skill in the art of jewelry-making, and thus were greatly pleased to name him a Companion of the Order of the Sycamore, and he was presented with a newly-made ancestral medallion by Sir Aengus MacBain, constructed on-site using instructions by His Lordship. Scroll illuminated by Lady Umbriana Campana and calligraphy by Armiger Urraca Beatriz Botelho.

Next, Their Majesites called for Shāh Megis Elmanou. Citing Megis' advocacy for bardic arts, and their talent, skill, and love for the bardic arts, Their Majesties declared that the proper response to their passion for the bardic arts is to recognize them as a Companion of the Order of the Sycamore. Scroll by Lady Christina Mary Lowe (Jinx) upon words by Lord Chaghagan Ghunan.

Their Majesties then wished to speak with Dame Kateryna ty Isaf. Their Majesties imparted words of their long acquaintance, their parallel paths, holding similar offices, growing in the Society alongside one another, and in particular, her ability to step in, to advise and to counsel, to support the Crown and Kingdom, and to ensure that the proprieties were observed. His Majesty also shared Dame Kateryna's ability to provide the “reality check” that sometimes was needed. In recognition and gratitude, Their Majesties presented her with an Æthelmearc Award of Excellence.

Their Majesties next invited Baron Andriú mac Domhnaill forward to present the banner created by the youth of the Kingdom at the Children's Fête.

Before releasing His Excellency, Their Majesties pointed out that he had hosted the party, and thus brought joy to the youth of Æthelmearc, facilitating people having a “howling” good time at that party, and thus, Their Majesties were pleased to induct Baron Andriú into the Order of the Howlings Wolf. Scroll by Duchess Bronwyn ferch Gwythyr.

Their Majesties then received representatives of the Assassins' Guild. The Guild wished to recognize Lady Elizabeth Coney and promote her to an agent of the Guild, and presented her with a stiletto as a mark of her membership in the Guild.

Their Majesties asked The Honorable Lord Methius Weasel to remain for a moment, as They also wished it known that at the State Dinner the night before, Magnus Tindal, King of the East, was heard to boast that His wizards could best Æthelmearc's assassins, and that They hoped to find an opportunity to put the lie to this claim.

In addition, Their Majesties acknowledged that while the Assassins' Guild required stealth, guile, and unobtrusiveness, His Lordship also goes big, launching siege bolts and reigning death in a most non-clandestine manner. They were also impressed by His Lordship's workmanship on the engines of the artillery, and thus, They called for the Noble Order of the Scarlet Battery and made His Lordship a Companion of that number. Scroll by Lady Bridget de Kyrkeland with words by Baroness Nuzhah bint Saleem.

Following this, Their Majesties sought Lady Sefa Vefari, with whom They wished to discuss her various skills and talents in fiber arts, creating lovely works of weaving and teaching others the same. Such is her wordfame, that it captured the notice of the Noble Order of the Fleur D'Æthelmearc, who insisted to Their Majesties that she should number among them. Their Majesties enthusiastically agreed, and thus, They called the Order to join Them, whereupon, They Granted her Arms and created Her Ladyship their Companion. Runestone scroll by The Honorable Lord Halfdan Dansson.

Their Majesties then addressed the Court as to the meaning and nature of a Court Barony. His Majesty explained that in Their opinion, the Court Baronies represent a distillation of what it means to be “Æthelmearc”--a recognizable embodiment of the values and virtues that we believe in as a Kingdom. There are many who are Barons and Baronesses of the Court and make the Crown proud whenever They see Them. Æthelmearc is blessed that it never seems to run out of candidates for this form of recognition. Her Majesty added that once a while, it is surprising to find that someone They have known for so long shines in their element, and that the role of the Crown had given Them the opportunity to see their leadership, honor, respect, teach, and leading from the front. Thus, Their Majesties called for Don Jehan le Blanc, to present him with a Coronet and name him a Baron of the Court of Æthelmearc, for his leadership and service to the Rapier Army. Scroll by Meisterin Amalie Reinhardt and Baron Ixac ben Simone.

Their Majesties then received The Honorable Lady Niamh Bean Bhrain ui Labhradha. Their Majesties thanked her for her efforts to run the Kingdom Party, her ideas, enthusiasm, her execution of an exceptional time that was marked by all. Thus, They were pleased to induct Her Ladyship into the Order of the Howlings Wolf. Scroll illumination by Master Angellino the Bookmaker, calligraphy by Lady Umbriana Campana.

Their Majesties then heard the case of The Honorable Lady Avitoria Vidua, who stood accused of artistry above her station. The charges against Her Ladyship were that she had taken knowledge without membership in any guild, sharing that knowledge without the guild's consent, and exhibiting skill beyond that belonging to one of her rank. Their Majesties rendered the judgment that while They could punish for this offense, it seemed easier to raise Her Ladyship's station instead. They inquired as to whether Her Ladyship had received the counsel of the Most Noble Order of the Laurel and if she had decided whether to join their number. Thus, They called for witnesses to her crimes. From the Order of the Chivalry, Sir Nikolai Vladislav accused Her Ladyship: of usurping the common table in his camp, working on garb, educating him on types of stitches, the appropriateness of the particular time period, and blithely working on “a commission” without disclosing for whom the cloak was meant—only to learn that it was, in fact, his Knighting cloak—a cloak about which he now knew details as to its authenticity. Moreover, he imparted the tale of how Her Ladyship utterly remade a tailored gambeson for him out of what had been an “off-the-rack” purchase. And finally, he pointed out that the very cushions on which the Royalty sat had been created by none other than Her Ladyship! These acts of generosity and artistic prowess marked her entirely guilty and Sir Vlad importuned Their Majesties to hold her accountable. The Order of the Pelican, in the personage of Baroness Hilderun Hügelmann, who employed her Peerage in bureaucracy to attest that Her Ladyship is verifiably performing all five of the requirements of Peerage: setting an example of courtesy and noble conduct, and enriching the kingdom by her skills. She serves the realm with her criminally generous heart, and Her Excellency accused her of being her Peer. Master Ali Abbas al Gazzaz, representing the Order of the Laurel, admitted that he himself may have unwittingly set Her Ladyship upon the course of her endeavours in the field of glass-making, believing her at first to be but a simple customer in his shop, and that over the years, she has shown that she loves the path one takes to be able to make a thing, as opposed to simply wanting to make a thing. He acknowledged the wisdom of the Court in choosing to elevate, rather than punish Her Ladyship and recognize her as a Peer. Thus, Their Majesties' justice bent toward mercy, and They called for the members of the Most Noble Order of the Laurel, who agreed that Her Ladyship was guilty, and thus ought to be raised among them. Her Ladyship was then presented with a medallion and a wreath denoting her new station, and gave her oath, and Their Majesties created her by means of Letters Patent, Magistra of the Most Noble Order of the Laurel. Scroll by The Honorable Lady Gesa von Wellenstein upon words by Magister Casimir Zelený z Strášná Skála, with seals by Mistress Phiala O'Ceallaigh.

Their Majesties asked for Lady Dorothea Starke Shütz and Lady Cadence of the Debatable Lands to come forward and receive Golden Escarbuncles and personal tokens for their service to the realm, most notably, repairing the throne bags on-site to make them more manageable.

Her Majesty then named Lady Umbriana Campana Her inspiration for the War, for the manner in which she discharged the duties of signet, including providing protective bags and silica packs for each scroll to keep out the damp, for making sure that the scrolls were all where they were needed, and generally elevating the rôle so that all ran smoothly for Their Majesties' Courts. Her Majesty presented Lady Umbriana with Her token.

Their Majesties then thanked all scribes, wordsmiths, and regalia wrights who had contributed to Their Pennsic Courts with their choice of supplies, as well as talismans against Demon Titivillus for those who did not already have one.

Their Majesties inquired about the hand fans that had been distributed and thanked the artisans for providing them.

Their Majesties then addressed the populace, hoping that the remainder of the War brought better weather, good fighting, and more friendship and fellowship. They expressed their deep gratitude and love for the Kingdom that raised Them, and saying that sitting the Thrones and seeing the Realm from the Royal perspective had reignited Their sense of wonderment and the feeling of excitement and awe, as if experiencing the magic of the Society once again for the first time, and that They could not be more proud of the Kingdom for the way that it spreads joy and belonging to all.

Wednesday, August 7

Upon the field, at the conclusion of the Fencing Novice Tournament. Their Majesties wished to be attended by Armiger Urraca Beatriz Botelho. While They remain impressed by their work in the scribal arts, it was for their skill and prowess in the rapier lists that brought them forward on this day, and in recognition of this, Their Majesties were minded to induct them into the Order of the Golden Alce. Scroll by The Honorable Lady Gwen Cooke.

In addition, Their Majesties desired to see Lady Matilda. Their Majesties declared Themselves very pleased with the progress she has made upon the list field and her dedication to rapier, including studying the historical masters with successful effect. For these reasons, They felt it proper to make her a Companion of the Order of the Golden Alce. Scroll by Lady Kolfinna Jodisardottir with words by Baron Jehan le Blanc. Court suspended.

Later, in the Æthelmearc Royal encampment, Their Majesties received His Grace, Duke Maynard von dem Steine, to hear whether along his pilgrimage that war, he had taken counsel to craft his answer regarding induction into the Most Noble Order of the Pelican. Upon his declaration of acceptance, They called for words of affirmation. Duchess Líadain ní Dheirdre Chaomhánaigh claimed the right to speak as a Jewel of Æthelmearc, expounding on His Grace's deep love and dedication to the Society over 35 years of blood, sweat, and tears that he has poured into his participation. Becoming a Knight, King, and Peer, he mindfully championed the idea that Peerage is not a right, but a responsibility, and since then, he has forged a legacy of respect and renown, yet still pushes farther, encouraging others and leading them to heights of service themselves. He has become the hero to others that others once were to himself. On behalf of the Chivalry, Sir Ian of Kennoven carried the words of Sir Sextus Plinius Calidus, recounting how His Grace as a young aspiring fighter, cobbled together armor, and through hard work, more than natural talent, as well as enthusiasm and dedication, he embarked on the start of the journey that included his first beer at his first Pennsic, all the way to where he is today, having served as Exchequer and Earl Marshall, and has become a driving force behind events emphasizing martial authenticity such as the Combat of the Thirty and the Road to Rouen, aiding and inspiring countless others to improve their authenticity and knowledge of history, enriching the lives of all who have met him. Mistress Laurencia of Carlisle spoke on behalf of the Order of the Laurel, saying that throughout history, there have been memorial masterpieces created by well-known artists with wealthy and famous patrons, and that Duke Maynard von dem Steine counts among the names of the most prolific patrons of the Society. He has ambitious projects that have pushed artists to reach new levels of expertise and skill, and their works on display have beautified and enriched the Kingdom as well as the Known World. For the Royal Peers, Duke Laurelen Darksbane imparted that often, when asked to speak at Peerage ceremonies, Peers speak of what a person has done, what they are, what comprises them, and what they leave behind, but that His Grace is not a “what,” he is a “who.” Who he is, who he brings with him, alongside him, who he leaves behind after him, who reveres him, not for his renown or service, not for his achievements, but for the spirit and generosity within him. His Grace continued that in the ancient days of the Order of the Pelican, a prospective member was expected to have made an impact on the whole of the Society, and that as the years have passed and the Known World has expanded into more separate Kingdoms, it is enough to affect the people for the betterment of a single realm. Not only is Maynard the bedrock of the Kingdom of Æthelmearc, he has shown himself to be a leader among the Society as well, because of who he is. Master Enzo di Pazzi, entering the Court as an emissary of France, spoke directly to His Grace Maynard, discussing how His Grace had empowered him and provided the springboard for things he would not have done on his own. He also recounted how His Grace took up the challenge of standing as the French Captain when war came to Rouen, embodying that rôle and driving the event to success, and making that which seemed impossible a reality with laughter, fun, and sincerity. And on behalf of the Order of the Pelican, Duke Sven Gunnarsson, mentioned briefly some aspects of the Pelican that His Grace deemed essential: lending a hand when a hand is needed; holding office and being diligent in discharging those duties; leading, inspiring, and speaking up to guide us into the future. By being an inspiration and leader, His Grace makes our Society better, pushing for immersive endeavours of passion that become success through his efforts, as well as delegating, which is an enviable trait. Having heard these testimonies, Their Majesties and Their Majesites' herald were so overcome that They bestowed upon His Grace the trappings of the station of Pelican: the ancestral medallion, a cotte, a hood, a personal medallion, and a cap of maintenance, and received his renewed oath, before remembering to call forth the Order of the Pelican! However, realizing this oversight, They did call forth the members of the Most Noble Order of the Pelican in to affirm their enthusiastic assent to including Duke Maynard into their number, and furthermore, to assist the Court by leading all in a chorus of "Happy Birthday"--for His Grace's birthday it was. Scroll illumination by Magnificana Fede di Fiore with text and calligraphy by Magister Casimir Zelený z Strášná Skála.

Their Majesties begged the indulgence of the populace to ratify and affirm a piece of old business begun by Their Royal Ancestors, Thomas Byron I and Ariella I, in order to cosign the creation of a Royal Academy and Livery Company of Engineers, whose charter for the sake of brevity has been appended to this Court Report. Court very briefly suspended…

…Only to reconvene moments later, for Their Majesties learned that Massimo Lucrezia was in attendance, and They had desired to speak with him. Noting his fierce dedication to fighting and his effectiveness and laudable conduct during and in support of such events as Combat of the Thirty and the Danelaw, even in the face of personal injury, Their Majesties agreed that these qualities are evidence of nobility, and thus Awarded him Arms. Scroll by Baroness Katherine Kiersey.

Their Majesties requested that Lord Massimo remain in order to convey Their words of praise to his brother, Rayleon Amadeus, who has similarly conducted himself with honor and demonstrated his steadfast dedication to fighting, as well as his proficient skill and artistry in the field of metalwork, creating many beautiful items for the Danelaw. For these and many other longstanding acts of contribution to the betterment of the realm, Their Majesties Awarded him Arms in absentia. Scroll by Baroness Katherine Kiersey. Court suspended.

Late that evening, at the conclusion of the Commedia performance at the Three Crowns Theatre, Their Majesties joined the cast upon the stage to congratulate them, and in particular, desired to speak with three ladies who were pillars of the Commedia and Performing Arts community and staff at Pennsic: The Honorable Lady Cael O'Conail, The Honorable Lady Edekyn O Fierhie, and Lady Safiya al-Nahdiyah of the Midrealm. All three of these gentlewomen have contributed to, led, organized, and worked tirelessly for the performing arts programs at Pennsic since they themselves were children, graduating to run Youth theatre programs as well, and becoming essential and driving forces for performing arts across the Known World. For these reasons, Their Majesties were well pleased to make all three Baronesses of the Court, and with the assent of Their Majesties Midrealm, to Grant Arms unto Baroness Safiya. All three were presented with scrolls illuminated by Lady Faílend Brecc O'Conail with words by Lord Chaghagan Ghunan. Baroness Cael's scroll calligraphy by The Honorable Lady Nichola Beese; Baroness Safiya's scroll calligraphy by Meisterin Amalie Reinhardt; Baroness Edekyn's scroll calligraphy by Boyarina Zaritsa Zavodchikovna. In addition, a second scroll upon the same wording, calligraphed by Baroness Sophie Davenport, was presented to Baroness Edekyn. Court suspended.

Thursday, August 8

Upon the archery range, Their Majesties conferred upon Lord Niall Mac Raedwulf his earned rank of Master Bowman. Court suspended.

That evening, in the bog of the Mountain Confederation Camp, His Majesty spoke with fondness of heroes of the Mountain Confederation who had played a part in His early training. He then continued that a fighting house often requires the stalwart support of its non-fighters to make the game possible, and that He was there to acknowledge the efforts of one such driving force within the Confederation: Lavender Rosalyn de Brymore, to whom Their Majesties gratefully Awarded Arms. Scroll illuminated by Lady Brida Dietrich, with calligraphy by Magister Ceindrech verch Eilidir upon words by Baron Alaric MacConnal.

There being no further business, Their Majesties' Court closed.
